Cormoran Strike update: Strike and Robin both cast!

A while back I did a post discussing some casting suggestions for the up-coming adaptation of J.K Rowling's - sorry, Robert Galbraith's - bestselling crime series featuring private detective Cormoran Strike and his assistant, Robin. The three part drama, based on existing books 'The Cuckoo's Calling', 'The Silkworm' and 'Career of Evil', is due to start filming in November and each episode will be an hour long. I was excited to hear that they'd finally cast Strike, and yesterday we found out who our Robin is going to be (see the original article in Variety). It's so exciting!!

Personally, I'm pretty pleased with the casting. When Tom Burke was announced as Strike I was unsure at first. He's best known for playing Athos in the BBC's Musketeers and I'm a fan - but I always think of him as the short one. Strike is supposed to be tall, and coincidentally, I was kind of holding out for Porthos as Cormoran. On reflection though, Athos is probably the better fit.  He's got the gruffness Cormoran needs but also a nice warmth, and I think he'll fit well with Holliday Grainger's Robin. He's not as short as I thought either (he's six foot).

I was more excited about the second casting announcement. I first saw Holliday Grainger in an adaptation of Jacqueline Wilson's The Illustrated Mum when I was a kid. She was great as Star (the eldest daughter) and she's been in loads since (Merlin, Robin Hood, The Borgias) although she's stayed surprisingly under the radar. You might recognise her from a recent adaptation of Lady Chatterley's Lover, where she played opposite Richard Madden, or as one of the not-at-all-ugly sisters from Disney's Cinderella (2015).  I like that they've cast a genuine Northerner (she's from Manchester) and I think she'll be able to capture Robin's intelligence and likeability. In fairness, she's probably too short as well, but we shouldn't quibble. She'll at least make Strike look tall by comparison.

Do you agree with the casting? Read the books and looking forward to the Cormoran Strike series? Let me know in the comments :D

  1. Really like the casting for both of these characters. Agree with you that they will have the necessary warmth and I like that they have cast a northerner as Robin too. As I am not quite five foot tall I think you worry about height just a bit too much.....!!

    1. haha, yeah the height isn't important really! I think they'll both be great :)
