Top Ten Tuesday: Liter-scary Halloween Costume Ideas

So Halloween's nearly here, and this week The broke and the bookish set us a Halloween themed post of our own choosing. I've gone with Halloween costume ideas based on literary characters. I tried to keep to ideas that you could put together easily, but I don't know if that's quite worked. For another creepy countdown, check out my new blog We'll meet it when it does to see my seven favourite films to get you in the Halloween spirit.

Sirius Black (Azkaban escapee)
from Harry Potter

You will need:
Long raggedy coat, black and white striped onesie, longish straggly hair, beard (could be drawn on?) Azkaban prison number, neck tattoo.

The White Witch
from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

You will need: Long white/silver dress, crown, white fur wrap or stole, witch's staff/wand - and maybe some Turkish delight to hand?

The Child Catcher
from Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang

You will need: Black suit (with tails and/or long black coat ) crumpled top hat with colourful flowers, lollipops, net.

Regency Zombie
from Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

You will need: Regency style clothing, fake blood, zombie make-up.

Captain Hook
From Peter Pan

You will need: Feathered hat, long red coat, big black boots (or black shoes with buckles) hook (can be improvised using old coat-hanger) sword and cutlass and/or gun-belt.

Cruella De Vil
from 101 Dalmatians

You will need: Black and white hair spray paint (or Cruella wig), something made of fur, long gloves, cigarette holder, bold eye-shadow and a red lip. Maybe something dalmatian patterned.

Winged Monkey
from The Wizard of Oz

You will need: Blue/grey face paints, grey leggings and jumper, red and blue jacket, fez, something for wings and a tail!

Miss Havisham
from Great Expectations

You will need: Long white dress and veil, lots of lace, streamers, raggedy bits. Maybe a cane and some dead flowers.

The Other Mother
from Coraline

You will need: Mumsie clothing, beauty spot, and something for the buttons - actual buttons, facepaint or round painted glasses?

The Grand High Witch

You will need: For the Witch in disguise - Black evening dress, long black gloves (essential!) hat. For her true form - bald cap, mask/fake nose and make-up, black evening dress.

    1. Thanks! I reckon Harry Potter characters are always good for Halloween, but thought Sirius was one you could do a bit differently :)

  4. I love this idea! My mom always used to get so freaked out by the monkeys in The Wizard of Oz. We never got to watch the movie when it was on TV.
